Being Remembered

Last weekend I attended three calling hours and one funeral.  Not something I want to repeat.  I have been thinking about something that was said at the funeral.  It was for a 29 year-old man who was a very devoted employee at Walmart.  His name was Ben.

Two of his brothers shared some stories about Ben and how much he will be missed.  I laughed and cried, almost at the same time.  But what has stayed with me all week was when the pastor shared some comments from fellow employees who worked with Ben.  They said he always brightened their day.  What a wonderful way to be remembered.

I sat there and began to wonder how much effort it would really take to brighten someone’s day.  And the answer is – not much at all.  When I think about how others have brightened my day, it was done by the simple things: a short call; a nice text; a letter of thanks or a warm hug.

I have heard it said before that much can be learned from someone even after they have passed.  I now understand.

Thank you, Ben.  You are still brightening the days of many.
